Doing this hike made me feel 20 years younger. It reminded me of younger days when my cousins and I would spend our weekends out at Sandy's and Makapuu and the numerous trips we made climbing this hill.
In my younger days the pathway to the top of this hill was poorly maintained and overgrown with grass. There was no parking area and there was also a mule path that ran down the other side which led to an area where many beautiful tidepools are located. So beautiful to swim in and a sense of being in some other part of the world. The light house was recently repainted and also fenced.
Along the way up the path there is much Keawe which the locals love to use as firewood and also many cactus blossoms ready to bud a new plant in its place. It is best to take caution while standing along side the cliff area while photoshooting to avoid slips and falls due to a sudden wind gush.
It is a beautiful area to catch photos of whales ( local humpbacks ) during early morning hours
This was one of those hikes I didnt really care to blog about only because I grew up in this area but now that its complete am glad to share with the world the colorful photos Ive taken and really a daimond in the ruff kinna lighthouse sweet & simple.
The hike is maybe a half mile to the very top and takes a healthy person about 15 -20 minutes tops. Also a very good hike for young ones and also people with strollers.
Location: Passing Koko Marina Shopping Center continue on South. You will pass Haunauma Bay , Sandy Beach , Hawaii Kai Golf Club and shortly after to your right before reaching Makapuu Beach Park you will notice a gate to your right which leads to a parking lot along side the hill. Park there and your hike begins at the gate.
